The Gaithersburg Community Museum is seeking volunteers to staff events held at the Latitude Observatory, 100 DeSellum Avenue. Training takes place on Saturday, April 22, 2017, from 10 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration is required to participate in the training. Volunteers will be taught the history of the site, the meaning of the geodetic markers, and how to operate the telescopes used during events. Students may earn service learning credits by attending the training and volunteering at two events. Volunteers must be 16 or older; parental permission is required for individuals under the age of 18. For more information and to register for the April 22 training session, please call the Gaithersburg Community Museum. Skywatching events held at the Observatory include a Group Astronomy Night on May 5, Montgomery County Heritage Days on June 24 and 25, Twin Stars & Mercury on June 24, Saturn on July 7, Perseids Meteor Shower on August 12, and a Solar Eclipse Party on August 21. Observatory Park is home to the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory. Operating from 1899 to 1982, the Observatory was one of six worldwide that measured the wobble of the earth on its polar axis leading to improved navigation and scientific discovery. This outdoor interpretive space highlights the importance of the scientific work conducted here for nearly a century.
