For Immediate Release: Thursday, March 15, 2018 Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will launch the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Initiative (1TBKI) on Saturday, March 24. The goal of 1TBKI is for parents to read 1,000 books to their children before entering kindergarten to encourage early literacy skills and family engagement. “Children who are read to are more likely to want to read on their own and be more prepared for kindergarten,” said MCPL Acting Director Anita Vassallo. “They also have larger vocabularies as they grow and more opportunities to be successful at school. We are very excited to bring this initiative to our community.” To celebrate the new program, County Executive Ike Leggett will be the guest reader for the Preschool and Toddler Storytime at the Noyes Library for Young Children on Thursday, March 29 at 10:15 a.m. The library branch is located at 10237 Carroll Place in Kensington. The program is flexible and encourages free choice of reading selections. Repeating the same book, counts every time. Families who read a book per day will exceed their goal in less than three years. Registration for 1TBKI is available at any of MCPL’s branches starting March 24. Participants can also sign up through the MCPL website – via the children’s page, where a list of suggested books are posted. All participants can track their progress on a paper log or through an online portal. Children will receive incentives along the way and prizes when they reach milestones such as reading 500 and 1,000 books.
