Olde Towne Plaza Ribbon Cutting July 26 Join City of Gaithersburg elected officials and staff for a special ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at 11:45 a.m. to unveil the brand new Olde Towne Plaza and its interactive splash fountains. The event is free and open to the public. Flip flops are encouraged so you can frolic with us! The ceremony will feature remarks and a ribbon cutting by local and state officials, committee members, and City staff. Stay after the ceremony to splash in the fountain with our water toys and enjoy complimentary Grandma Kona ice treats (available to the first 200 people). In addition to the interactive water fountain, the Plaza, located at 1 South Summit Avenue, features benches, umbrellas, and Adirondack chairs, making for an inviting gathering space. The water feature has select seasonal hours. Complete details are available here. Follow on Facebook for updates. Olde Towne Plaza is located in Gaithersburg’s original central business district, adjacent to the B&O Railroad Station and Freight Shed, both of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. The City acquired the property from the railroad in 1984. The Plaza was designed to improve pedestrian access and safety in Olde Towne, create a gathering space for outdoor programs and events, raise the profile of Olde Towne as a transit-rich neighborhood, and stimulate demand for nearby businesses. Whether enjoying the interactive fountain and nearby Community Museum, or waiting for a MARC Train, Olde Towne Plaza honors the original historic functions of its location as a transportation hub and gathering place.
