To encourage property owners to install eligible RainScapes techniques such as rain gardens, conservation landscapes and rain barrels, DEP offers technical assistance and rebates of up to $2,500 for residential properties and $10,000 for institutional, homeowner association common areas and commercial properties. DEP is offering the following workshops to assist residents: RainScapes Rain Garden Workshop Property owners interested in creating an environmentally friendly and beautiful rain garden that reduces stormwater runoff can register for a RainScapes Rain Garden Workshop to be held at the Brookside Gardens Visitors Center Adult Classroom. Workshops are scheduled for Thursday, April 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. (Course #272199) and Friday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to1 p.m. (Course #272249). The fee is $12 for Friends of Brookside Gardens or $15 for non-members. To sign up, call 301-962-1451, go to ParkPASS.org (beginning February 15) or register in person at the Brookside Gardens Visitors Center, 1800 Glenallan Ave, Silver Spring. Participants will learn how to evaluate their property’s potential as a rain garden and receive assistance in applying for a RainScapes Rewards rebate. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will receive some native plants to help start their rain garden. RainScapes “Make and Take” Rain Barrel Workshop Workshop participants will receive instructions, a rain barrel (one for each household) and all equipment necessary to collect and temporarily store rainwater from a rooftop downspout for outdoor uses. Attendees will learn how to apply for a future RainScapes Rewards rebate if purchasing additional rain barrels. Workshops will be held at Montgomery College Germantown campus, 20200 Observation Drive, on Friday, April 25, 10 a.m. to1 p.m. (Course #272299) and Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. to1 p.m. (Course #272349). The fee is $12 for Friends of Brookside Gardens or $15 for non-members. To sign up, call 301-962-1451 or visit ParkPASS.org, beginning February 15. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees are reminded that their vehicle should be big enough to transport a 55-gallon (two-by-three-foot) barrel. RainScapes Conservation Landscape Workshop Attendees will learn how to evaluate their property’s conservation landscape potential, create a conservation landscape (a native plant garden) and apply for a RainScapes Rewards rebate. Because native plants are deep-rooted, they help to slow down and soak up rainwater, preventing runoff that can wash pollutants into storm drains and streams. The workshops are offered on Thursday, May 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. (Course #272350) and Friday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Course #272351) at the Brookside Gardens Visitors Center Adult Classroom, 1800 Glenallan Ave, Silver Spring. The fee is $12 for Friends of Brookside Gardens or $15 for non-members. To sign up, call 301-962-1451 or visit ParkPASS.org beginning February 15. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will receive some native plants to help start their rain garden.
