Day of Service Encouraged for Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

SOURCE: Gaithersburg City of Maryland

o honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the City of Gaithersburg will be issuing an official proclamation at the Mayor and City Council meeting on Monday, January 4 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. The proclamation calls for residents to honor Dr. King’s memory by participating in a Day of Service. Gaithersburg is joining with Montgomery Serves and Seneca Creek Community Church to host a morning of service projects that will benefit the most vulnerable in our community. More than 15 projects suitable for a variety of ages and skill levels will be conducted at the church, located at 13 Firstfield Road in Gaithersburg, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016. Among the planned activities (subject to change) are assembling and delivering move-in welcome kits for low-income renters and homeowners, creating Valentines for cancer patients, making placemats for children at NIH, packing and delivering bag breakfasts, lunches and toiletry kits for the homeless, making paper flowers and cards of encouragement for low income seniors, assembling superhero capes for children undergoing medical treatment, and many more. Because space is limited at the church, pre-registration is required. The Gaithersburg location, now in its third year of operation, is one of three sites in Montgomery County that are hosting Day of Service activities. The others are in Rockville and Silver Spring. There will also be a countywide “Help the Hungry” food drive to benefit Manna Food Center at select Giant grocery store locations on Saturday and Sunday, January 16 and 17. For more information and to register for all volunteer projects visit the Montgomery County Volunteer Center at http://montgomeryserves.org/mlk-day-service-2016. Montgomery County’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Musical Celebration and Tribute takes place at Strathmore in Bethesda on January 18. The free, ticketed event includes musical entertainment, readings by Literary Arts Award winners, and the announcement of the 2016 Children of the Dream and Humanitarian Awards. More information on this event will soon be available at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.
