For Immediate Release: Thursday, January 12, 2017 Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host its first comic convention, MoComCon, on January 21 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Silver Spring branch located at 900 Wayne Ave. This event is open and accessible to all, including seasoned comic conventioneers, novices, and the curious of all ages. The event will include a variety of panels, workshops, programs, displays, exhibitors and cosplay opportunities — all free of charge. Events include: Dalek Drawbots with FutureMakers for children; Comic Drawing with William Jones for children and teens; Comic Critiques with Megan Lavey-Heaton for teens and adults; Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy and Getting Published with Don Sakers; Panels: Diversity in Comics and Graphic Novels, Gaming and Society and The Creative Process; and Cosplay contest with prizes for children, teens, and adults. Cosplay is a costume event where participants dress in character. No weapons, including replica and costume pieces, will be allowed inside of the event. Registration for specific MoComCon activities and the cosplay contest will begin on-site at the Silver Spring branch at 11 a.m. MCPL branches will host themed lead-up events throughout January. Gandhi Brigade Youth Media presents an Adobe Illustrator workshop class for the introduction of digital tools, materials and procedures used to create a digital portrait trace of comic super hero characters. 12 pm 2 pm Staff from the Gandhi Brigade will answer questions between the two sessions, as time allows. Register on the 3rd Floor starting at 11am. 1pm, Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing A hands-on workshop where participants will discuss and practice some basic narrative techniques for fiction writing. If you have an MCPL card, please bring it with you. 2pm, Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing The current landscape of publishing is confusing and overwhelming. Participants will learn about options for writers who want to get their work out there. If you have an MCPL card, please bring it with you. Comic Critiques with Megan Lavey-Heaton (Teens & Adults) Limited seats. Register on the 4th Floor at Megan’s table. Individuals and collaborators are invited to sign up for private critiques with experienced comics creator Megan Lavey-Heaton. 10-minute critiques will cover comics or script writing. Please bring 3–5 pages of work to be critiqued. Open to teens and adults. 5 th Floor Dalek Drawbots with FutureMakers (Ages 12 & Under) Limited seats. Register on the 3rd Floor starting at 11am. Create a machine that can wiggle and draw! Use motors, batteries and art materials to create a simple switch and motorized circuit, and construct substantial, whimsical machines that draw on paper. Presented by Futuremakers. 12 pm 1 pm CosPlay with Greater Columbia Fantasy Costumers Guild Limited seats. Register on the 3rd Floor starting at 11am. 12 pm, Teen/Adult Costuming 101 Costume on the Cheap! We’ll discuss simple-to-make items, what can be bought, and how to adapt things from a thrift store or items you already have. We will show you some tips and tricks to inexpensively add details and flair to costumes and accessories. 2 pm, Ages 12 & under Hands-on costume workshop.
