Posted: October 13, 2016 From October 2016 to June 2017 up to 200 City of Gaithersburg residents will be participating in a brand new Financial Fitness Challenge, “It’s Your Money, Make it Count.” This initiative of the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council, Bank On Gaithersburg and the Financial Wellness Coalition provides monthly incentives as residents accrue points by taking steps to improve their financial wellbeing. A Launch Party will take place on Wednesday, October 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at La Casita Restaurant, 2 East Diamond Avenue in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. Bank representatives, financial and vocational coaches and other service providers will be on hand to explain the program and sign people up. Enrollment can be done at the Launch Party or with any of the partnering organizations, and is limited to the first 200 participants. Admission to the Launch Party is free. There will be activities for children, free food, prizes and giveaways. The City’s elected officials and Matthew Spring, a representative of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, Inc., which provided a grant to help underwrite the program, will be on hand to officially kick things off. Fitness Challenge program participants will receive a passport book, with lists of activities that will help set them on a road to financial empowerment. Among the activities are opening a checking and savings account, attending a vocational education class, attaining a GED, saving a portion of their tax refund, developing a budget, and much, much more. As certain point levels are attained each month, participants can earn incentives such as gift cards and admission to places like the Gaithersburg Water Park and Miniature Golf Course. Points will then be tallied at the end of the program and those qualifying will be entered into a drawing for one of two grand prizes: $500 towards a non-revolving bill or one week of camp through Gaithersburg’s Summer in the City Program. Partnering organizations include BB&T, CAFÉ Montgomery, Capital One, Career Catchers, the Community Action Partnership, The Dwelling Place, Family Services, Inc., the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Housing Initiative Partnership, Interfaith Works, the Jennings Business Group, LLC, Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Montgomery Community Media and the Spanish Catholic Center of Catholic Charities. The Gaithersburg Financial Fitness Challenge is administered through the City’s Department of Community and Public Relations, Community Services Division.
