For Immediate Release: 10/5/2015 The public is invited to join County Executive Ike Leggett, Wednesday, October 7, from 5 to 6 p.m., as he celebrates Hispanic Heritage month in Montgomery County with the premiere of the “Stories of Migrating Youth” Exhibition at the Silver Spring Library on 900 Wayne Avenue in the third-floor meeting room. The exhibition highlights the stories of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students from around the world, but many mainly Central America, who have reunified with family members and formed a new life here in the United States. They support each other when they can and work hard to reach the goals they have set for themselves. As the newest members of our community, they are creating a stable life on which to build a successful future. Leggett, and Director of Montgomery County Public Libraries Parker Hamilton, will meet with the students from Sherwood High School who decided to share their inspirational stories with the rest of the world. The books that will be featured at the exhibit were part of a community outreach program at the Sandy Spring Museum in fall 2014. More than 30 ESOL students participated in the program. They learned bookbinding skills, participated in informal art therapy sessions, influenced by the trauma the students experienced in their respective journeys, and created personal stories of their own migration to the United States.
