Nationwide Program Urges Families to Appreciate the Great Outdoors Rockville, Maryland, May 11 — Croydon Creek Nature Center will host a celebration of National Kids to Parks Day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Attendees can enjoy a free make-and-take activity, and hike trails that wind through the 120-acre Hayes Forest Preserve. Croydon Creek Nature Center is located at 852 Avery Road. The Mayor and Council issued a proclamation on Monday, May 7 declaring May 19 as National Kids to Parks Day, noting that it “will broaden children’s appreciation for nature and outdoors.” The day is celebrated by thousands of children in Rockville and nationwide. The eighth annual National Kids to Parks Day encourages families and youth across America to experience the natural and historic treasures — and fun — available in neighborhood, state and national parks. Rockville is home to more than 1,000 acres of parkland, with 65 parks that feature a wide range of amenities and activities, from playgrounds to picnic tables to pavilions. Nine out of 10 people responding to the 2016 City of Rockville Community Survey reported that they had visited a Rockville park at least once over the previous 12 months, and 82 percent rated the range of activities in city parks as “excellent” or “good.” The city has been honored for four years in a row as a Playful City USA, a program that recognizes towns and cities across the U.S. as great places for kids to learn and play. Kids to Parks Day offers students from urban and rural communities the opportunity to take part in hands-on environmental education, while also enhancing health and wellness through outdoor recreation.
