For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 22, 2018 The Wheaton TGIF Concert Series will conclude at 7 p.m. Friday, August 24, as long-time local favorite “The Nighthawks” highlight the last of the six free summer concerts at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park. The park is located at 11200 Amherst Ave. and Reedie Drive in Wheaton (behind the Safeway supermarket and one block from the Wheaton Metro Station). Attendees are advised to bring chairs or blankets to better enjoy the outdoor atmosphere. The Nighthawks are a Washington-area legendary blues and roots band (and Blues Music Award winners). In 2017, the band released its most recent CD “All You Gotta Do.” The band is also enjoying critical acclaim for Michael Streissguth’s award-winning documentary film about their history, The Nighthawks – On the Blue Highway. In 2015, Montgomery County’s cable channel, County Cable Montgomery, produced a feature about the band’s local roots. It was a special edition of the show Made in Montgomery. The band’s origin can be traced back to 1972, although it solidified in 1974. It has gone through many members, but Mark Wenner, remains the lone remaining founding member. He is in his fifth decade of playing harmonica and being featured on vocals with The Nighthawks. The current lineup includes Johnny Castle (vocals, bass), Paul Bell (guitar) and Mark Stutso (drums, vocals). The band opened many doors and forged many touring routes for their contemporaries, including the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray. The Nighthawks played with many blues and rockabilly legends and often opened shows for Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Carl Perkins. The band backed up and recorded with John Hammond and Pinetop Perkins. The Wheaton TGIF Concert Series is hosted by the Wheaton Urban District in partnership with Montgomery County Parks.
