New Features Added to Senior Lunch Program Beginning August 1

For Immediate Release: 7/17/2013 New Features Added to Senior Lunch Program Beginning August 1 Beginning August 1, Montgomery County residents over age 60 will notice new features to the Senior Lunch Program. Seniors will be able to enjoy a choice of a hot or cold meal, a monthly baked potato bar, a monthly sub sandwich bar and special holiday menus as part of the Senior Lunch Program. The new menus will be offered at the 17 locations currently serving senior lunches. The locations include senior housing sites, senior centers and community centers throughout Montgomery County. Meals are served Monday through Friday and approximately 95,000 meals are provided at the lunch program sites each year. “We are excited about the new changes to the program,” said Melanie Polk, director of the Senior Nutrition Program, part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Aging and Disability Services. “We look forward to offering more choices for residents and we encourage everyone to try our new offerings.” Each meal provided through the Senior Lunch Program provides one third of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for older adults and follows the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Nutrition screening, education and counseling are also available through the Senior Nutrition Program. A registered dietitian answers questions at the Senior Nutrition Hotline every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Call 240-777-1100. Individuals 60 years of age and older and their spouses (of any age) are eligible to participate. Donations towards the cost of the meal is requested. Those under age 60 pay $5.49 per meal.
