Montgomery County Department of Economic Development Hosts 2015 SBA Emerging Leaders Initiative; National Entrepreneurship Training Program Fosters Increased Small Business Growth, Job Creation

For Immediate Release: 4/9/2015 The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently kicked-off its 2015 Emerging Leaders Initiative, an intensive executive-level training program intended to accelerate the growth of high-potential small businesses. The Montgomery County Department of Economic Development (DED) has partnered with the SBA’s District Office to host one of two Metro DC area programs at their Rockville offices. The program, offered in 48 cities across the country,, consists of a series of 13 classes held bi-weekly and culminating in a graduation ceremony slated for late October. The SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative is a national program that offers executive education to prepare and encourage small businesses to move to the next level. The program is designed to enhance entrepreneurial success, generate new jobs, attract investment and provide participating companies with a sustainable economic base. “We are excited and proud to partner with the SBA to host the Emerging Leaders series here at our Rockville offices,” said DeVance Walker, Jr., Ph.D., chief, DED Division of Small and Minority Business Empowerment, whose team is working with the SBA’s District Office staff to facilitate the Montgomery County program. “What a great initiative to help aspiring executives of the future develop the skill sets they need to bring their industries and enterprises to the next level.” The Emerging Leaders Initiative advanced training series is for established business owners that have annual revenues of at least $400,000, have been in business for at least three years and have at least one employee other than self. The Montgomery County program kicked off on April 8 with a full cohort of 20 participants, seven of whom are from Montgomery County. Three additional Montgomery County business executives are participating in the other regional programthat is being hosted in Washington, DC. Montgomery County executives selected for the SBA’s Washington/Baltimore region 2015 Emerging Leaders Program are: Montgomery County DED program: Angela Graham, Quality Biological, Gaithersburg Beatrice Key, Key & Associates, Silver Spring Carmen Larsen, Aquas Inc., Bethesda Ryan Nuessle, Bravium Consulting, Kensington David Posin, SOLDIERFIT, Gaithersburg Aaron Udler, Office Pro, Gaithersburg Mary Windham, Occasions, Inc., Rockville Washington, DC program: Lindsey Allard Agnamba, School Readiness Consulting, LLC, Silver Spring Rosa Caldas, ZemITek, Silver Spring Nhora Murphy, TMNcorp, Silver Spring The Emerging Leaders Program has been a catalyst for expanding opportunities for businesses across the nation, particularly in underserved communities. The program includes a pre-designed and approved curriculum with sessions on business and leadership, finances, marketing and sales, and resources lead by a professional instructor. The seven-month, intensive entrepreneur executive education series includes approximately 100 hours of classroom time per participant and provides the opportunity for small business owners to work with experienced mentors, attend workshops and develop critical connections with their peers, city leaders and funding resources. Nationally, Emerging Leader graduates have secured more than $1 billion in government contracts and accessed $73 million in new financing. Graduates also reported creating nearly 2,000 new full-time jobs since the program’s inception in 2008. Sixty-two percent of surveyed participants reported an increase in revenue and 70 percent reported maintaining or creating new jobs in their communities. The initiative graduated nearly 400 small business owners in 2014, representing the largest graduating class since its inception.
