May 30, 2016 Christman Park | 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Memorial Day Loyalty and patriotism will be on full display as the City of Gaithersburg joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at its Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 30, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Christman Park. The public is invited to join the Mayor and City Council, City staff and honored guests in a tribute to Gaithersburg’s sons and daughters who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. A special Memorial Day video featuring two local veterans from World War II is available on the City’s YouTube channel. Click here to view video. Joining the observance will be guest speaker Colonel Barry W. Wolcott, Associate Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Science in Bethesda. Colonel Wolcott currently employs his medical experience developing and integrating patient-focused decision support applications for Expert 24, as well as providing clinical support and advice to both clients and colleagues. The patriotic ceremony will include words and music to commemorate the occasion and a solemn wreath-laying ceremony. At the event, guests will be invited to fill out a card and provide a 4×6 photograph for a Book of Tribute, honoring friends and family members who serve. Also on display will be a map depicting the World War II invasion beaches of Normandy, France, courtesy of U.S. Navy Captain Sam Edelstein, who left the map and a description of his service to his son, Gaithersburg resident Frederick Edelstein. Christman Park, named for Lt. William J. Christman III, a Gaithersburg resident who was killed in Vietnam, is located at 304 West Deer Park Road in Gaithersburg. Groups or individuals interested in attending or participating in the Memorial Day Observance may contact the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. To support homeless veterans in Montgomery County, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) John M. Carter Post #9862 has partnered with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH), which provides emergency shelter to an average of 75 veterans annually. MCCH’s Operation Homecoming provides homeless Veterans with a safe, stable and affordable place to live. Donations, including food, toiletries and cleaning supplies, are being collected to assist Veterans with their move. A complete list is available below. Items Needed Toiletries Cleaning Supplies Food Shampoo/Conditioner Dishwasing Soaps Canned Chili/Stews/Soup Soap Dishwasher Detergent Canned Tuna/Salmon/Beans Toothbrushes/Toothpaste Bathroom Cleaners Dried Fruits & Nuts Razors/Shaving Cream All-Purpose Cleaners Canned Fruits & Vegetables Lotion Cleaning Supplies Peanut Butter/Jelly Deodorants Laundry Detergent Ground Coffee Hairbrushes/Combs Dryer Sheets Cereal/Oatmeal/Granola Bars Towels Sponges Rice/Pasta/Sauce Donations can be dropped off during the Memorial Day Service. Monetary donations are also being accepted, and will be used to purchase furniture, small kitchen appliances, linens, and household items. Checks can be written to either the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless or to the VFW. The Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village Rotary Clubs are also hosting Flags for Our Heroes over Memorial Day Weekend. Hundreds of flags honoring local heroes will be on display on the front lawn at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm May 28 through 30. An opening ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on May 28.
