SILVER SPRING, MD — The most fintastic time of the year is back and making a splash in the Washington, D.C. metro area – making sure that area residents and tourists alike can get in on the community fun. In anticipation of SHARK WEEK, which kicks off on Sunday, June 26, 2016, Discovery Communications is initiating community activities on its home turf of the Silver-Spring, MD-based media company, starting this week. “Discovery loves getting the local community involved in SHARK WEEK and we are excited to kick off a number of ‘fintastic’ festivities in the area,” said spokesperson Tammy Shea. “Every year we try and make SHARK WEEK activities reach more residents, whether it’s an art installation, Chompie Jr. office or metro visit, or family music event in the neighborhood.” VOTERS CHOICE REVEALED For the 2nd year, Discovery Communications asked local residents how it should decorate its Silver Spring headquarters building. A survey was released with three potential options for the south façade of the building along Colesville Road and Wayne Avenue (facing the metro) which included: the “Toothy Grin,” “I Heart Shark” and “Fintastic Shark” murals. After roughly a thousand people voted during the week of June 6 to 10, the clear winning mural was … Fintastic Shark! With about double the votes as the 2nd place finisher, the Fintastic Shark mural was installed Monday, June 20th. As he does every year, Chompie Jr. will be spreading SHARK WEEK cheer around the Washington D.C. area until Friday, June 24, visiting local tourist spots and unsuspecting offices throughout the area. JOIN FAMILY FUN FEST In Downtown Silver Spring, MD, a SHARK WEEK Family Fun Fest will be held on Friday, June 24 from 6 to 8pm. Area residents and visitors will be treated to a face painter, balloon artist, greeting from Chompie Jr., shark fin hat and other giveaways, and music from the Annapolis, MD-based funk reggae band Eight Ohms.
