Subject Proclamation Declaring May 2017 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Recommendation Read, approve and present proclamation to members of the Asian Pacific American Task Force. Discussion Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. This date was chosen because two important anniversaries occurred during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in America on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (by many Chinese laborers) on May 10, 1869. Congress later voted to expand it from a week-long celebration to a month-long one. Rockville has become increasingly diverse, and its Asian Pacific American community is one of its largest ethnic groups. Annually, the Asian Pacific American Task Force has encouraged the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by incorporating the culture into Hometown Holidays through traditional performances, games, displays and activities. This year, the City of Rockville will continue to support Asian Pacific American community by participating in the following local activities: • 2017 Taiwan Night Concert by the Taiwan Culture Center of Greater Washington DC at the Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center, Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. This event will start at 7:00 p.m. Reserve tickets or learn more by emailing tlh9529@yahoo.com or calling 301-332-5908. • A film, forum and lecture series, celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage month at Thomas S. Wootton High School (April 28, May 2, May 20, May 23). Topics will range from a film about the Mississippi Delta Chinese to a lecture about Asian immigrant parents and their American children. On the April 28 performace, the City’s Asian Pacific American Task Force will have a table showcasing the City of Rockville programs and services.
