For Immediate Release: 7/28/2015 The Salvadoran-American Day Festival will celebrate Montgomery County and the Metro region’s Salvadoran community Sunday, August 2, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Wheaton Triangle. The event will take place in the parking lot at the Wheaton Triangle at the corner of Reedie Drive and Grandview Avenue, one block north of the Wheaton Metro Station. As in the past, the festival will feature Salvadoran food, local craft vendors from El Salvador and other Latin-American countries, along with musical entertainment. Many local Latino bands are scheduled to play, covering ranges from cumbia, salsa, merengue, Rock in Spanish, to reggaeton, as well as a special appearance by La Maquina. This free, family-oriented festival also includes a Latino health fair where residents will be able to participate in free and confidential health screenings, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, HIV, and others. The Latino Health Fair is coordinated by Maryland State Delegate Ana Sol-Gutiérrez and supported by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and AARP. Major participants in the Latino Health Fair are Kaiser Permanente, MobileMed, Mary’s Center Mama Bus, and Amerigroup. New this year is a 1,000 children’s book giveaway with donations by Books for America. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about various community services, such as Police and Volunteer Rescue opportunities; passport renewals through the Salvadoran consulate; information about the upcoming elections and voter registration from the Board of Elections; and more. Montgomery County, in partnership with the Salvadoran-American Transnational Communities (COTSA – their acronym in Spanish, which is Comunidades Transnacionales Salvadoreñas Americanas), along with Delegate SOL-Gutierrez, invites the entire community to participate in this festival. This marks the sixth anniversary of this event, which commemorates Salvadoran American Day in the United States.
