Montgomery County Public Libraries Provides Additional Resources for People with Disabilities; New Accessible Computer Workstations Placed in Montgomery County Public Libraries

For Immediate Release: Friday, April 28, 2017 Most Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) branches, including the library at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, now have an additional computer workstation that makes assistive technologies available to Montgomery County residents. The new assistive technology workstations have an electric height-adjustable table, a magnifier, and a computer with assistive software. The desktop electronic magnification system is an Optelec ClearView+ Speech Magnifier that can be used as a traditional magnification tool or as a touchscreen system that reads printed materials out loud. The computer features a large monitor, a large print keyboard, JAWS screen reading software, and MAGic screen enlarging software. These features allow people who have disabilities to more easily and efficiently access information over the Internet or in print than they could with a standard computer workstation. Comprehensive information about the new workstations and other library resources for people who have disabilities can be found on the Montgomery County Public Libraries website at montgomerycountymd.libguides.com/disabilityservices/adaptivetechnology. “We are delighted to have these new accessible workstations for our branches,” said MCPL Director Parker Hamilton. “This allows us to provide additional resources for our residents with disabilities. The assistive technology workstations have already been placed in 19 branches, and the locations currently undergoing and preparing for refreshes will have new workstations installed as their refreshes are completed.” Residents are invited to visit their local library to use a new assistive technology workstation. A list of branches of the Montgomery County Public Libraries can be found at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/library/. Funding for this project was provided through a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. For more information about the assistive technology workstation, contact Elizabeth Lang, Assistant Facilities and Accessibility Program Manager at 240-777-0039.
