For Immediate Release: 4/30/2014 Taste the World in Fenton Village Returns for 4th Year with Bigger Roster of Restaurants, Music, and Culture International cuisine from 30 restaurants will take the spotlight at Taste the World in Fenton Village on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 1 to 6 p.m. Often called the “hidden gem” of Silver Spring, Fenton Village is an eclectic, diverse community located just south of downtown Silver Spring between Wayne, Georgia and Burlington avenues and Fenton Street. Taste the World participants can sample not just a wide array of food but the special atmosphere of each of the venues, which offer Ethiopian, Thai, Greek, Italian, Central American, Indian and many other authentic dishes from around the globe. Restaurants will offer special appetizers and small tasting plates at $2 to $5 apiece. “Taste the World is unique as it is a ‘restaurant crawl’ where each restaurant hosts tastings in their restaurant, so it’s fun whether it rains or shines,” says Debbie Linn, project manager for the event. “The 2014 event promises to be our biggest event ever as several new restaurants are joining us and we’re adding a second stage for entertainment,” says Sue Decker, co-chair of the commercial economic development (CED) of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board. “In addition to the great food, there will be free talks about Silver Spring history at the restored B&O train station, and as always, we’ll have great raffle prizes.” The participating restaurants are Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant, The Big Greek Café, Bombay Gaylord, Fenton Café, Fire Station 1 Restaurant, Gebeta Ethiopian Restaurant, Ghar-E-Kabob, Golden House, The Greek Place, Jackie’s Restaurant, Kaldi’s Coffee Bar, Kefa Café, La Madeleine Country French Café, Langano Ethiopian Restaurant, Lesaac Ethiopian Café, Lotus Café, and Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant. Also, Mandarin Restaurant, Manny & Olga’s Pizza, Odalis Bar and Restaurant, Pacci’s Neapolitan Pizzeria, Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza, Piratz Tavern, Roger Miller Restaurant, Society, Thai Derm, Thai Market, Urban Butcher, Vicino Ristorante Italiano, and Zed’s Café. “Taste the World gives everyone a chance to not only taste a variety of delicious food, but the opportunity to help support our community and stronger communities mean a stronger nation,” says Lene Tsegaye, co-owner of Kefa Café. Adds Spiro Gioldasis, proprietor of Pacci’s Neapolitan Pizzeria: “Walking through Taste the World is a great way to experience all that Fenton Village has to offer—including a great deal on the best pizza in town!” The 2014 event will feature a variety of free music and entertainment on two stages. Blair High School Concert Orchestra (Classical, Jazz), Red Castle Blues Band (Blues), Dual Rhythm (Jazz), Shake Shake Fitness (Dance), Urban Nation Hip Hop Choir (Pop, Hip Hop) will perform on the Fenton Street stage. Red Audio Wire, Alexander Boulden, Paul Sklar, and Cloud 9, as well as surprise Yelp Readings and pop-in artists, will appear on media sponsor Yelp’s stage throughout the day. Yelp and radio station All The Hits 107.3 (WRQX) have signed on as the first-ever media sponsors for Taste the World in Fenton Village. Event attendees may pick up their Taste the World passports at Parking Lot 3 on Fenton Street between Thayer and Silver Spring avenues, or at the Yelp stage at the Georgia and Sligo avenues. Once participants have their passports stamped at three or more restaurants, they can enter a free drawing for prizes from local merchants. The grand prize is a “Weekend for 2 in Silver Spring” that includes car service, hotel, dining, entertainment and breakfast. The raffle drawing is at 5:30 p.m. at the Fenton Street stage. The Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board and Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. co-host this volunteer-driven annual event in collaboration with local small business owners and with the support of corporate sponsors and county government. The first Taste the World in Fenton Village was held in 2011. Some 200 businesses have a store front in Fenton Village. In addition to more than 30 independent restaurants, these small businesses include spas, a martial arts academy, jewelers, music stores, a travel agency, a comics store, art supply store, thrift shop, international groceries, dry cleaners, art non-profits, and more. The Silver Spring Metro Station is a 15-minute walk from the Fenton Street stage area. Free parking will be available at nearby garages and County-owned parking facilities.
