For Immediate Release: 8/19/2014 On August 30 and 31, the Town of Brookeville will host its U.S. Capital for A Day celebration as part of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. To allow visitors to move around freely and to provide for re-enactments each day, Georgia Ave .will be closed to all but pedestrians and horses during the event on Saturday and Sunday. Transportation in and out of town will be by free shuttle bus from various satellite parking lots and the Glenmont Metro station. Road closings will take place at the intersections of: • Georgia Ave./Rt. 97 and Goldmine Rd. • Brookeville Rd. and Grayhaven Manor Rd. (closed to thru traffic) • Brookeville Rd. and Market St. and • Market St. and the WSSC Bldg., near 198 Market St. on Saturday, August 30 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, August 31 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Detour routes to move traffic around the town will be clearly marked. Because no driving or parking will be allowed in Brookeville during the event, satellite parking areas will be available at: Camp Bennett (20501 Georgia Ave., Brookeville) and MedStar Montgomery Medical Center’s construction lot (across from 18101 Prince Phillip Drive, Olney). Parking is free at both sites. Leashed dogs will be allowed in town, but not on the shuttle buses. Handicapped-accessible shuttle buses will transport visitors from the two lots to the event in Brookeville. The bus from Camp Bennett will make an intermediate stop at Brookeville Rd. for those visiting Oakley Cabin. Golf carts will take attendees who are unable to walk comfortably from the shuttle stops to activities. Additional shuttle buses will run from the Glenmont Metro Station (12501 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring). Shuttle buses from MedStar Montgomery and Glenmont will stop at the Longwood Community Center (19300 Georgia Ave) on the south side of Brookeville; shuttles from Camp Bennett will stop at a private residence with a circular driveway (19801 Georgia Ave., Brookeville) on the north side of town.
