For Immediate Release: 1/6/2015 Montgomery County Afternoon Winter Weather Update – January 6, 2015 1 p.m. For Immediate Release: January 6, 2015 The National Weather Service upgraded today’s Winter Weather Advisory to a Warning for Montgomery County (and Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties). A thin heavy snow band across northern Washington caused higher accumulations than originally predicted. Four to six inches of snow has been recorded across the County. Another small band of snow currently moving through the County will produce very little additional accumulation. The greater-than-predicted accumulation of snowfall in Montgomery County has caused the following conditions, delays and cancellations: Residents are urged, if possible, to delay driving until later this afternoon to allow snow plows the ability to treat and plow the roads. County main arterials are cleared prior to neighborhood roadways. The condition of the arterials is expected to be greatly improved by this afternoon’s rush hour. Roads that caused the longest delays this morning and are still of concern are: New Hampshire Avenue at Adelphi Road and at Piney Branch Road (utility pole struck) Ednor Road between Norwood Road and New Hampshire Avenue Aspen Hill Road between Veirs Mill Road and Arctic Avenue Norwood Road between Route 108 and Dr. Bird Road Ride On bus passengers should expect delays through the afternoon until neighborhood road conditions improve. All County-provided trash and recycling services have been suspended for today, with services for the remainder of the week sliding one day later. For example, households that did not receive pickup today will be serviced on Wednesday, January 7; Wednesday customers will receive collections on Thursday, etc. with the last collections being made on Saturday for Friday customers. More information about the service slide schedule is available at ?www.montgomerycountymd.gov/sws/. For questions regarding trash/recycling collections, call 311. County Recreation centers have cancelled all of their programs, classes, after school and sports activities. Senior centers are closed. Community centers and Aquatic centers are open for drop-in activities. All branch libraries are open as scheduled. The Department of Permitting Services has cancelled all inspections for today and will reschedule them for a later date. Except for Child Care programs which are taking place as scheduled, all school and community activities in school buildings are cancelled due to Montgomery County Public Schools being closed. # # # Release ID: 15-004 Media Contact: Public Information Office 240-777-6507
