Posted on: March 3, 2016 Rockville Student to be Named ‘Mayor for a Day’ This Spring Winner Will be Chosen Through ‘If I Were Mayor’ Essay Contest Rockville, Md., March 3 – Rockville fourth-graders are encouraged to participate in the Maryland Municipal League (MML)’s “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. The theme of this year’s contest, organized by MML and the Maryland Mayors’ Association (MMA), is “Rising to the Challenge.” One winning essay will be selected from each of MML’s 11 regional districts throughout the state. Winners, their parents and their teachers will be recognized during an awards ceremony in Annapolis and will receive $100 cash, a governor’s citation and a boat cruise of Annapolis. In addition to the winners chosen by MML and MMA, Rockville’s Mayor and Council will select a student attending school in Rockville to be the city’s “Mayor for a Day” this spring. The contest asks students to imagine they are mayor of the fictional “Happy Town,” which is on a list of “Worst Towns” because of its citizens’ unhealthy habits. Essays should answer the following questions: What new programs or services would you create to help citizens lead a healthier life/make the town a healthier place to live? How would you get citizens to participate? What things would you do to make sure the town stays off the list? Essays of up to 275 words should be mailed to MML, 1212 West St., Annapolis, MD 21401. Entries must be received by Thursday, March 31. Learn more by visiting www.mdmunicipal.org and selecting “Mayor’s Essay Contest” under “Programs and Services,” or call the City Clerk’s Office at 240-314-8280. The Mayor and Council consider the contest to be a wonderful exercise in government studies and encourage fourth-graders attending school in Rockville to participate. Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton recently visited St. Raphael School to encourage students to enter. The honor of serving as “Mayor for a Day” includes lunch with Mayor Newton, a tour of the city and participation in Rockville’s Memorial Day parade.
