The City is Celebrating its 27th Year as a ‘Tree City USA’ Rockville, Maryland, April 14 – Rockville will mark Earth Day and Arbor Day with a tree-planting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22 at Beall Elementary School, 451 Beall Ave. The ceremony will include a presentation by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service of an award from the Arbor Day Foundation recognizing Rockville as a “Tree City USA.” In addition to the planting ceremony, city staff members will work with student volunteers on stream buffer planting and stream cleanup. City Forestry Division staff members are visiting first-grade classes in Rockville to discuss Arbor Day and the many benefits of trees, and to present tree seedlings to students to take home and plant. It is the 27th consecutive year Rockville has received the “Tree City USA” designation. To be named a Tree City USA, a city must have: A tree board—a function served by Rockville’s Recreation and Parks Board. A community tree ordinance. The city’s Forest and Tree Preservation Ordinance has been in place since 1992. A community forest program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita. Rockville’s budget provides about $20 per capita for tree maintenance and planting. An Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Rockville also received a 2015 PLANT (People Loving And Nurturing Trees) Green Award from the Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee. Green is the highest level of the PLANT award.
