FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact for the Media: Bill Bronrott, 202-270-4415 bronrott@gmail.com Contact for the Public: www.worldofmontgomery.com Phone: (301) 897-5437 World of Montgomery Festival A Passport to a Free Interactive, Family Friendly Celebration of the Area’s Largest Cultures with Headline Musical Acts, Traditional Arts, Food and Kids Activities Galore Sunday, October 18, 12-5 PM in Rockville Rockville, Maryland (October 2, 2015) – The World of Montgomery Festival is a free family-friendly event that inspires multicultural appreciation and understanding by exploring the rich cultural diversity of the DC area with international music, food, dance, exhibits, hands-on arts and crafts, and immersive activities. The annual festival will be held at a new location at the Montgomery College Rockville campus on Sunday, October 18, 2015, from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. At the International Village, experience the cultures and traditions of the four countries of Montgomery County’s Sister Cities partnership that have the largest immigrant populations in the County – China, El Salvador, Ethiopia, and India. Children and adults can make their own traditional crafts, and enjoy music, performances and games. There are two entertainment stages, a craft market, ethnic food vendors, and fun activities for the whole family. Participate in a variety of fun, hands-on activities, including traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, dancing with a Chinese dragon, and henna art painting. Performance stages spotlight dancers and musicians in native dress, such as Chinese mask theatre, an Ethiopian drumming and dance group, Indian dancers performing a harvest celebration, and an El Salvadoran marching band. Feet pounding rhythms of traditional African drummers, Bolivian dancers and performers in native dress from varied cultures circle the festival grounds during the Parade of Cultures at 1:30pm. Headline musical acts include Robbie Schaefer of Eddie From Ohio fame at 12:30pm and Latin sensation Verny Varela with his high-energy band at 4:00pm. Also during the afternoon, The Crawdaddies bring their own brand of Cajun, Zydeco, Blues, Roots and Raggae to the stage, and the Washington area’s hottest 13-piece Salsa and Meringue band Pablo Antonio y La Firma are a sure crowd pleaser. Demonstrations of traditional arts and interactive activities also abound at World of Montgomery. The scents of spices envelop you as you try your hand at Roti making in the Global Spice Market or watch international chefs prepare regional dishes in the Global Kitchen. As a preview of their upcoming Mask Exhibit, KID Museum is offering a series of cultural mask-oriented activities. Create your own molded masks using clay and a vacuum-molder, and help construct three giant communal masks. Participants can try on masks from different regions and of different styles and take photos in KID Museum’s photo booth installation, “Reflections on the Selfie.” In addition, masks and mask making will be presented by all of the different countries at World of Montgomery. “This multicultural celebration gives children and adults alike an appreciation for the rich, diverse world that is in our own backyard, said G. Keith Haller, Chairman of the Fund For Montgomery, the lead presenter of the festival. “It’s about inspiring a new generation of ‘global ambassadors’ who can make ours the most welcoming community in the country.” In support of Montgomery County’s Community Service Week (October 16-25), attendees can visit the Volunteer Center’s “Volunteer Village” and participate in an onsite community service project while learning about current and future opportunities to lend a helping hand locally.
