For Immediate Release: 10/1/2013 Montgomery County Recreation Offers Safe, Fun Halloween Activities Montgomery County Recreation is offering the following safe and fun-filled Halloween activities for children and teens during the Halloween season: Free Activities: • October 25 — Halloween Happening. Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center, 14906 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Ages 12 and under. Includes games, crafts, D.J., dancing and treats. Free but parents are asked to donate unopened bags of individually wrapped candy. • October 25 — Halloween Haunted House. Long Branch Community Recreation Center, 8700 Piney Branch Road, Silver Spring. 7 to 9:30 p.m. For elementary school-aged children accompanied by an adult. • October 26 — Halloween Extravaganza. East County Community Recreation Center, 3310 Gateshead Manor Way, Silver Spring. Noon to 2 p.m. K-5th grade. Games, prizes, face painting, costume contest, crafts and more. • October 27 — Clara Barton Halloween Party. Clara Barton Community Recreation Center, 7425 MacArthur Boulevard, Cabin John. 4 to 6 p.m. Ages two to 11 years. • October 31 — Harvest Festival. Good Hope Community Recreation Center, 14715 Good Hope Road, Silver Spring. 5 to 8 p.m. All ages. • October 31 — Halloween Puppet Show. Ross Boddy Community Recreation Center, 18529 Brooke Road, Sandy Spring. 6 to 7 p.m. Ages K-6th grade. • October 31 — Trunk or Treat. Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza, 1 Veterans Place. 6 to 8 p.m. Perfect for teens who have outgrown the traditional trick-or-treating but love the Halloween fun. Geared to teens, but open to families of all ages. A fun-filled, safe event but helps serve the needy. The cost of the event is one can of food for the food bank. • November 2 — Fall Harvest Fest. Wheaton Community Recreation Center, 11711 Georgia Avenue. Noon to 2:30 p.m. All ages. Free with canned food donation. The following activities have a nominal fee: • Fridays, October 11, 18 and 25, 7:30 – 10 p.m.; Saturdays, October 12, 19 and 26, 7 – 9 p.m.; and Thursday, October 24, 7 – 9 p.m. — Haunted “MURKWOOD” Forest — SCARY! -$13. Damascus Community Recreation Center, 25520 Oak Drive. Venture into the Murkwood Forest where ghosts fly, witches brews are made, Frankenstein and his bride play chase, the knight awaits your password, and zombies dance at a bonfire. Not for the squeamish, but perfect for those looking forward to a Halloween scare. Not recommended for children under eight years old; parents must accompany children under 12 years. Individuals with adverse effects to strobe lights, smoke machines, sudden noises, extreme darkness or the sight of blood are advised not to attend. An outdoor event; closed-toed footwear recommended. The Damascus Community Recreation Center invites community members to get involved in the Haunted Forest. Many opportunities available, including acting and working behind the scenes. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours are available.
